The Other Blackberry

There are two kinds of blackberry " up the creek". I noticed the ubiquitous Himalayan blackberry blooming last week. Today on the back road the other type, with deeply cut leaves, has blossomed.

Barbara Portwood Evergreen blackberries (I'm told they're native, and nowhere near as invasive as Himalayan) also make a fabulous wine.

Barbara Portwood And on a related note, if you've never been before, plan a trip to the Shallon Winery in Astoria. He makes a marvelous evergreen blackberry wine, as well as a chocolate orange whey wine that is to die for. Go quickly, the sole proprietor winemaker is 92...
